On-device mode is perhaps the main point of frustration, as being able to download languages so you can use Translate without a connection is extremely useful. As with other Apple-made iOS apps, you have to venture out of the app and into Settings to tweak some more complex elements.Īdmittedly, there isn’t a whole lot of further functionality to be had here – simply letting you allow Translate to function using mobile data and the option for an on-device mode. However, there is more to this app, and that’s where a degree of hassle creeps in. In the Italian translation, Google slipped up on the gender of some words while in Spanish it muddled the meaning of some sentences. Throughout My Language Lab’s testing of these apps, the company utilised an extract from The Art and Architecture of Islam 650-1250 by Richard Ettinghausen and Oleg Grabar for analysis purposes, with a focus on Italian and Spanish translation capabilities. But what good are these features if the translations aren’t necessarily up to snuff? My Language Lab found Google Translate’s translations to be broadly accurate but spotted some errors, especially relating to morphology (the structure and composition of the words in the sentence) and word gender. The more complex settings allow for specific tweaks, such as allowing offensive words, choosing specific regions for certain languages and turning on offline translation. Once you’ve completed any translating, you can share and save them. Camera lets you take a picture of text to translate it Conversation is for live translation as you and someone else converse in different languages and Transcribe is for translating ongoing audio from one source. All languages support dictation and can be downloaded for offline use.You’ll then see “Camera”, “Conversation” and “Transcribe” options clearly presented. This grew to 17 languages as six new languages were added in 2022, such as Turkish, Indonesian, Polish, Dutch, Thai and Vietnamese. Translate originally supported the translation between the UK (British) and US (American) dialects of English, Arabic, Mandarin Chinese, French, German, the European dialect of Spanish, Italian, Japanese, Korean, the Brazilian dialect of Portuguese and Russian. The Vietnamese language was added to the app on July 27, 2022.

The six new languages work on iPhone 8 or later, iPhone 8 Plus or later, iPhone X or later, iPhone SE (2nd generation) or later, iPad Air (3rd generation) or later, all iPad Pro models, iPad Mini (5th generation) or later and iPad (5th generation) or later. On June 6, 2022, Apple announced six new languages, Turkish, Indonesian, Polish, Dutch, Thai and Vietnamese.

It was also released for Mac models on October 25, 2021, along with macOS Monterey. The app was officially released for iPad models on September 20, 2021, along with iPadOS 15. On June 7, 2021, Apple announced that the app would be available on iPad models running iPadOS 15, as well as Macs running macOS Monterey. All translations are processed through the neural engine of the device, and as such can be used offline. Introduced on June 22, 2020, it functions as a service for translating text sentences or speech between several languages and was officially released on September 16, 2020, along with iOS 14.
